Atalanta

Atalanta kick off their Conference League group-stage campaign against a side that, like them, featured in last season’s Champions League. The Cypriot visitors have twice travelled to the Italian peninsula to face Serie A opposition and have come away empty-handed on both occasions.
The Bergamo side entered the international break on a three-match losing streak and only snapped that run in their most recent Serie A outing. However, the 3‑1 victory over Venezia should not be overrated. The “orange‑black‑greens” sit rock bottom of the table with zero points, yet they still managed to create higher‑quality chances than Atalanta. That pattern has become typical under Maurizio Sarri: his team have lost the expected‑goals battle in five of their six league fixtures this term.
Qualification for the Conference League proper was also a struggle. Atalanta needed a single goal – scored in the 72nd minute of the second leg – to edge past modest Hapoel Tel Aviv over two rounds. The new possession‑based style is still not clicking, and we do not anticipate a sudden surge in positional‑attack productivity against Pafos. Sarri is highly likely to rotate heavily, given that the third‑tier European competition holds little appeal for the club and a Lombardy derby against Milan awaits on Sunday. Defensive solidity is also questionable: already‑injured Kossounou and Hien may be joined by two more regular centre‑backs, Scalvini and Bellanova, who are both doubtful.
Pafos are the reigning Cypriot Cup winners, but over the full distance of last season’s domestic league they finished only fourth – and they occupy the same position after five rounds of the new campaign. Away from home, though, Ricardo Sa Pinto’s men have been impressive, still boasting a perfect record on their travels this autumn. They also proved capable of raising their game for a high‑stakes encounter when they beat champions Omonia 1‑0 in the Super Cup – the same Omonia that are now competing in the Europa League and have already defeated Celta Vigo.
Pafos themselves dropped out of the Europa League after losing to an unbeaten Red Bull Salzburg (0‑1, 3‑3), then squeezed past Albanian side Dinamo City in the final Conference League qualifying round (1‑1, 4‑2 after extra time). Since then, Sa Pinto has worked intensively on the defensive side of the game, and his team have kept four clean sheets in their last six official matches. Their attacking options, however, are severely limited by injuries to wingers Jaja and Mumi Ngamale.
Atalanta (4‑2‑3‑1): Sportiello – Zappacosta, Kristensen, Kolasinac, Bernasconi – Pasalic, Gaetano – Elmas, Raspadori, Zalewski – Scamacca
Out: Hien, K. Sulemana, Kossounou (all injured); Scalvini, Bellanova (both doubtful)
Coach: Maurizio Sarri
Pafos (4‑2‑3‑1): Maecki – Bruno, D. Luis, Mmae, Sema – Pepe, Shunjić – Correia, Guga, Biel – Lele
Out: Ngamale, Jaja, Goldar, Kyriakidis, Gorter (all injured); Zage, Noro (not in squad)
Coach: Ricardo Sa Pinto
Atalanta ended their losing streak against the worst team in Serie A, but talk of a recovery is premature. Venezia’s open, attacking style – completely mismatched with their squad quality – played into the hosts’ hands. Now Sarri’s side face a far less pleasant “park‑the‑bus” approach, and we do not expect a comfortable stroll. The home team’s positional attack remains far from sharp; in Serie A they average just 1.05 xG per match. Pafos, by contrast, defend competently in a low block and have won every away game this autumn. Add in Atalanta’s likely rotation and their struggles against Hapoel in qualification, and a plus handicap on the underdog looks appealing. We are willing to take the risk and back Pafos not to lose at odds of 2.96.
As for the total, a goal‑fest is also unlikely. Pafos have gone “under” in four of their six European matches this season, while Atalanta managed only one goal across two legs against the Israeli side. Therefore, total under 2.5 goals at 2.41 is worth considering.
