💡 Match preview CSKA Sofia vs Monaco

By Babatunde Sowole — Football Expert on European & South American Cups

The Ligue 1 leaders are about to step onto the Conference League stage for the first time this season. Monaco have yet to taste defeat in any official fixture and arrive as one of the tournament’s clear favourites. Their opening opponent is CSKA Sofia—a side that has lost three consecutive European matches and recently changed coaches. Can the Bulgarian outfit, under these circumstances, truly challenge the principality’s powerhouse?

Tactical Analysis: CSKA Sofia

CSKA Sofia remain unbeaten in the Bulgarian domestic league (eight wins, three draws), but their European form tells a very different story. The qualifying rounds for the Europa League ended with three straight losses: 1‑3 against Maccabi Tel Aviv, followed by 0‑3 and 0‑2 defeats to OFI. Now they face Monaco under a new manager. Hristo Yanev resigned in September, citing the mounting pressure around himself and the squad. Daniel Morales took over on an interim basis, and at the end of the month Markus Gisdol was appointed head coach. His debut in the last league round produced a 3‑2 victory over CSKA 1948, but it was far from comfortable: after leading 2‑0, his team allowed the opponent to equalise and only snatched the three points in the 90th minute. The German himself admitted he was pleased with the result but acknowledged there is still plenty of work to do.

Gisdol has already begun tweaking CSKA’s tactics. In that last league match, the team lined up in a 4‑3‑3 formation. However, Monaco’s aggressive pressing could force the hosts to spend most of the game on the back foot. Organising a reliable defence is made harder by personnel issues: Gbamen missed the CSKA 1948 game through injury, and Martino was substituted at half‑time because the coach did not want to risk a player who wasn’t fully fit (he should be available for the Conference League). On the positive side, Monaco’s full‑backs push high up the pitch, leaving gaps that CSKA can exploit on the counter. Once they win the ball, the Bulgarians are capable of quickly launching it forward, relying on the pace of Pittas or Zwart. Unfortunately, Braimi’s suspension reduces their options on the flank and limits the attacking firepower available from the bench.

Tactical Analysis: Monaco

Monaco have started the season without a single loss. In six Ligue 1 rounds, Filipe Luís’s side have collected 14 points, and in the Conference League qualifiers they dispatched Górnik twice (3‑2 and 4‑1). The Monegasques are clinical with their chances: in the league they have scored ten goals from an xG of 7.78. However, the five goals they have conceded from an xGA of 8.09 suggest the defence is not as solid as the results imply. For instance, against Toulouse (2‑2), a high‑press approach helped them race into a 2‑0 lead, but then the intensity dropped, gaps appeared between the lines, and the opponent fought back. Filipe Luís admitted his team allowed the opposition to move the ball too freely. That match showed that even a strong start does not guarantee Monaco total control of the game.

The transition problems could become more acute if Zakaria does not recover in time for the trip to Bulgaria. The captain was substituted during the Toulouse game, but the Swiss international explained it was merely a precaution. In attack, though, Filipe Luís has plenty of options. In the 4‑2‑3‑1 shape, Golovin helps link play between the lines, while Vanderson and Nazinho provide width with their overlapping runs. Monaco’s main goal threat is Brunner, who has scored four times in five league matches and added two more in the Conference League qualifiers against Górnik. His suspension in Ligue 1 does not carry over to European competition, so the forward is eligible to face CSKA. Furthermore, Ansu Fati has returned to the pitch, giving the coach more scope to strengthen the attack during the game.

Predicted Lineups

CSKA Sofia (4‑3‑3): Lapoukhov – Pastor, Ivanov, Rodriguez, Martino – Ebong, Jordau, Senti – Pittas, Zwart, Pereira

Out: Braimi (suspension), Cotter (not registered), Gbamen (doubtful) Head coach: Markus Gisdol

Monaco (4‑2‑3‑1): Gradetski – Vanderson, Sane, Dyer, Nazinho – Benzahra, Camara – Ablin, Golovin, Idumbo – Brunner

Out: Balogun (not registered), Minamino (doubtful) Head coach: Filipe Luís

Prediction and Bet

CSKA’s best hope lies in quick counter‑attacks into the space left by Monaco’s marauding full‑backs. But to exploit those gaps, the hosts first have to survive the visitors’ high press. If CSKA keep losing the ball in their own half, they will spend most of the match pinned back, rarely threatening the opposition goal. Moreover, the managerial change has not yet cured their defensive fragility: even in Gisdol’s winning debut (3‑2 against CSKA 1948), the team allowed the opponent to come back from 2‑0 down. In European competition, the Bulgarians have lost three straight games, each by at least two goals. True, Filipe Luís’s men also make mistakes at the back, but Monaco have far more tools to sustain pressure and upgrade their attack as the match progresses. In our view, this advantage should secure a comfortable victory for the Monegasques.

Main pick: Monaco to win with a handicap of -1.5 at odds of 2.20.

Total goals pick: If Monaco score first, CSKA will have to push forward, leaving additional space for the visitors to exploit. That scenario is especially dangerous for the hosts: in their last three European outings they have conceded eight goals, while Monaco have netted seven in just two Conference League qualifiers. Yet the hosts’ attempts to pull one back could also pay off. Monaco’s full‑backs bomb forward, creating gaps for Pittas and Zwart to run into, and the French side does not always recover its defensive shape quickly after losing possession. We expect the visitors to score at least three times, but CSKA might grab one of their chances. Therefore, we back over 3.5 total goals at 2.50.
