Deportivo La Coruña and Levante have been keeping their supporters on edge lately, regularly serving up matches full of unexpected twists. Unfortunately for both sides, entertaining football hasn’t always translated into the results they crave. Now they meet at the Riazor, where each will aim not only to thrill the crowd but also to collect three desperately needed points.
The Galicians kicked off the campaign in fine style, picking up eight points from their first four fixtures – including a victory over last season’s bronze medalists Villarreal (3–2). That promising start was followed by four matches without a win, though in three of those outings they actually outperformed their opponents in terms of expected goals (xG). In the home clash with Betis (1–1), for instance, Deportivo’s xG stood at 2.09 against Betis’s 0.80. Most recently, they fell to Real Sociedad (2–3), conceding three times inside the first hour before pulling two back and nearly rescuing the game after Marin’s 69th-minute red card sparked a period of sustained pressure on the Basque side’s goal. Despite the dip in results, the quality of football produced by Antonio Hidalgo’s men suggests a return to winning ways may not be far off.
However, securing all three points will be complicated by a string of absences. Forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (5 goals, 2 assists this season) and Eddahchouri (12 goals, 4 assists in last season’s Segunda) are both sidelined through injury. The midfield also has gaps: Barça loanee Casado is injured, while Amatuchu – who started all but one of the seven league matches so far – is suspended. With two centre‑forwards unavailable, Hidalgo abandoned his usual 4‑4‑2 in the last game and switched to a 4‑2‑3‑1. Even that tactical reshuffle may not fully compensate for the missing personnel.
Luís Castro’s side have managed just one victory in seven league rounds – but what a win it was. At the end of August, they stunned Betis 5–2, handing the Andalusians their only defeat in the current La Liga campaign. The team certainly has character: in the last match against Sevilla (3–3), they came back from 0–2 down, fell behind again, and then snatched a draw with a goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time. Yet despite that heroic effort, the defensive record is alarming. Over the past three matches, Levante have conceded ten goals and allowed opponents to create chances worth 9.05 xG. The coaching staff urgently need to shore up the back line, or the team risks spending the entire season in the lower half of the table.
On the injury front, Eiong has resumed partial training with the group, while Sotelo and Primo remain in the treatment room. A particular concern for Levante is their away form. At home, they have scored ten goals in three games; on the road, they have managed just one goal in four trips. That makes the visit to the Riazor another stern test for an attack that has so far failed to fire away from the Ciutat de València.
Deportivo La Coruña (4‑2‑3‑1): Román – Navarro, Jiménez, Ede, Quagliata – Villares, Soriano – Cruz, Asp Jensen, Yeremay – Nsongo Unavailable: Casado (injured), Aubameyang (injured), Eddahchouri (injured), Amatuchu (suspended) Head coach: Antonio Hidalgo
Levante (4‑4‑2): Ryan – Tolyan, Dela, Ndukwe, M. Sánchez – V. García, Rey, Olasagasti, Brugue – Romero, Musuai Unavailable: Sotelo (injured), Primo (injured), Eiong (doubtful) Head coach: Luís Castro
Both teams arrive at this fixture on four‑match winless runs, but Levante’s situation looks more worrying. The Valencians have struggled badly away from home, collecting only two points from four road games. Deportivo, meanwhile, have lost just once at the Riazor (0–1 to Sevilla), beating Valencia (3–1) and drawing with Elche and Betis (both 1–1). In their most recent home outing, the Galicians clearly out‑created their opponents (2.09 xG vs 0.80) but were let down by poor finishing. Given the home‑field advantage and Levante’s weak away record, backing a Deportivo victory at odds of 2.11 looks appealing.
Over/under bet: Levante’s defence has been leaking goals regularly (ten conceded in the last three rounds), and Deportivo should be able to exploit that. The Galicians have scored in seven of their eight league matches but have yet to keep a clean sheet. That gives the visitors a decent chance to finally show some attacking threat on the road, where they have been far less potent than at home. Even without Aubameyang and Eddahchouri, Deportivo still have a dangerous weapon up front: Yeremay Hernández. The team’s leader last season (11 goals, 10 assists in 38 Segunda appearances) is gradually regaining sharpness after injury and not only scored against Real Sociedad in the previous round but was also one of the standout performers. With both sides vulnerable at the back, a high‑scoring encounter seems likely. Consider the over 2.5 goals option at 1.90.
