Le Mans

Le Mans are still finding their feet in Ligue 1 after a 16-year absence, but a growing injury list is making life much harder. Last week the promoted side lost as expected to the reigning champions (1–3), though they hardly looked out of their depth. Toulouse, meanwhile, gave Monaco a real fight in a 2–2 draw, proving once again that they can go toe-to-toe with the league’s best. Now the visitors have a genuine opportunity to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses and show that their first win of the season was the start of an upward trend.
Le Mans have not looked like outsiders since returning to the top flight. In their first six matches they have lost twice (2–3 to Rennes, 1–3 to PSG), drawn three times, and beaten Lorient 2–1 before the international break. Last weekend Patrick Videira’s men kept the contest against PSG alive for a long time, only succumbing once Paris’s star players entered the fray. Crucially, Le Mans are still unbeaten at home, having collected five of their nine points at their own ground.
The hosts tend to play on the counter: they win the ball, transition quickly, and try to catch the opposition defence off guard. Louis Mafouta has been the main threat, scoring four times so far. He leads the team in shots and has the highest expected goals (xG) at 3.2. Another key figure is Adil Bourabaa, who has been involved in five goals and is the chief creator. However, Bourabaa picked up an ankle injury while on international duty with Algeria and will definitely miss this match. Even without him, Le Mans still managed to score against PSG and created other dangerous moments. Mafouta himself had ankle trouble but played over an hour against Paris and got on the scoresheet. If needed, Gueye – who has already scored this season – can step in up front.
The treatment room also contains Martin Rossignol and Erwan Cola, limiting the coach’s options from the bench. Defensively the situation is brighter: Sidibe returns from suspension, adding variety to the backline.
Toulouse’s start to the season has been uneven: one win, three draws, and two defeats in six rounds. Yet the results do not fully reflect their performances. The losses to Lyon (0–2) and Lille (0–1) were tight affairs, and the first victory – 3–2 against Le Havre – showed that the attacking potential is gradually being unlocked. Last week Jens Bertel Askow’s side came from 2–0 down away to Monaco to earn a 2–2 draw, extending their run of away draws. Kasper Tengstedt continues to impress, with four goals in his last four appearances, while Jørgensen is in good form and helps create danger in the final third.
Casseres plays a vital role in progressing the ball; the midfielder already has four assists. He starts attacks from deep, then Jørgensen links the midfield with the forwards and also joins the finishing moves. The returns of Francis, Diallo, and Dønnum give Askow more options, though it is unclear if they are ready for heavy minutes. Nicolaisen’s participation remains doubtful. Despite these uncertainties, Toulouse have reason to be optimistic: they have shown they can compete with France’s elite, and the absence of several Le Mans attackers could make it easier to neutralise quick counter-attacks.
Le Mans (3-5-2): Kochik – Voye, You, Boisse – Bamba, Lore, Bretelle, Verkruijs, Kaloda – Diallo, Mafouta
Out: Bourabaa, Rossignol, Cola (all injured)
Head coach: Patrick Videira
Toulouse (4-2-3-1): Rest – Messali, McKenzie, Kumbassa, Tape – Vossa, Casseres – Tengstedt, Jørgensen, Azizi – Russell-Rowe
Out: Nicolaisen (doubtful)
Head coach: Jens Bertel Askow
Main prediction: Toulouse to win at 2.33
Toulouse come into this match on the back of a spirited performance against Monaco (2–2), while Le Mans lost to PSG and are dealing with significant absences. Without Bourabaa, the hosts will find it much harder to finish chances and break down a compact defence. Askow’s team have not yet won on the road, but their displays against Lyon and Lille deserved more. If they maintain the intensity they showed in the second half against Monaco, they have a strong chance of finally taking three points. Backing Toulouse to win at 2.33 looks appealing.
Total goals prediction: Over 2.5 at 1.73
Despite mixed results, matches involving both sides tend to be high-scoring. Le Mans have scored in all six league games, and Toulouse have been involved in 2–2 draws with Brest, Lorient, and Monaco, plus a 3–2 win over Le Havre. The hosts are dangerous on the break, while the visitors know how to raise their game as the match progresses and possess more quality in attack. Even if Le Mans’ injury issues reduce their offensive output, Toulouse can set the tempo and help push the total over the line. Taking over 2.5 goals at 1.73 is the call.
