Paris suffered their first defeat of the season last time out, falling 0:1 at Lorient. Now they face an in-form Rennes side on home turf. The visitors have climbed into the top three after thrashing Auxerre 4:1, but they also burned significant energy in a midweek European clash. Can the hosts make their freshness advantage count?
The opening stretch of the campaign had been kind to Paris: three wins and two draws from their first five Ligue 1 outings. Liam Rosenior's men swept past Nice 3:0, grabbed all three points in Marseille with a 3:2 success, and dealt with Strasbourg 2:1. The solitary slip came after the international break, when they returned empty-handed from Lorient. That 0:1 defeat was harsh on the capital side, who outperformed their hosts in expected goals (0.97 to 0.56) and registered more than twice as many shots (17 to 8).
At home, Paris have looked a different proposition altogether, conceding just one goal across three league fixtures in front of their own supporters. Much of the attacking inspiration flows through Lassiné Sinayoko, who has already found the net four times, supported by midfielders and wide players capable of creating chances from deep or from the flanks.
The squad is not at full strength, though. Left-back Nhoa Sangui is still working his way back to fitness, while centre-back Samir Chergui was forced off with an injury in the previous round. On the brighter side, Emmanuel Mbemba and Otávio have returned and should help patch up the defence. Winger Moses Simon remains doubtful after illness kept him out of the Lorient match.
Rennes have made an assured start, losing only once in six matches and steadily moving up the standings. Last weekend they tore Auxerre apart 4:1, with Esteban Lepaul, Adrien Thomasson and substitute Boulaïe Dia — who netted twice — all getting on the scoresheet. It was a perfect response to the heavy 0:4 defeat against Lyon.
The midweek Europa League fixture against Greek outfit OFI added another layer of exertion, even though Rennes came away with a 2:1 win. That extra match means less recovery time before the journey to the capital. Franck Haise has enough squad depth to rotate, but the Lyon humiliation served as a warning that European commitments can weigh heavily: prior to that collapse, Rennes had been held to a 0:0 draw by Sturm Graz.
There is encouraging news on the injury front, however. First-choice left-back Quentin Merlin and winger Arnaud Nordin are back in the fold, giving Haise more options during this congested period. With a daunting trip to Juventus scheduled for next week, managing the squad will be just as important as the result here.
Bastien Dechepy has been handed the whistle for this one. Last season in Ligue 1, he earned a reputation as a no-nonsense official, averaging 4.44 yellow cards per match. He has kept to that standard this term, showing exactly four cautions in each of his three appearances. Interestingly, in both head-to-head meetings between these clubs last season, Paris collected more yellow cards than Rennes (4:2 and 2:0 respectively).
Main call: Paris to win at 2.30. The defeat at Lorient aside, the hosts are a force at home, where they have beaten Nice 3:0 and Strasbourg 2:1 while also holding Lyon to a 0:0 draw. Add last season form, and Paris have won seven of their last nine home league matches. Rennes are higher in the table and carry a serious attacking threat, but they had to grind out a late victory over OFI and will have had less time to recharge. Rosenior's players, by contrast, enjoyed a full week of preparation. With the backing of the home crowd, they can seize control from the opening minutes. If they manage to shut down the space Rennes need for their quick counter-attacks, the freshness factor should prove decisive. Taking Paris to win at 2.30 looks the smart play.
Total goals call: Paris team total over 1.5 at 1.90. In two of their three home league matches, Paris have scored at least twice. They have had an entire week to prepare for this fixture, while Rennes must cope with a quick turnaround after their European exertions. The 0:4 loss to Lyon exposed real vulnerability in the Rennes defence when put under sustained pressure — opponents average 2.18 expected goals against them in Ligue 1 — and in three of their six league games, they have conceded two or more goals. With the home support behind them, Paris should be able to breach the visitors' backline at least twice. The individual total of over 1.5 at 1.90 is the way to go.
