Sparta
LillestrømBy Babatunde Sowole — Football Expert on European & South American Cups
The two sides arrive in Prague from very different places. Sparta Prague rolled to a thumping 4-1 away victory over Ararat-Armenia in their opening league-phase fixture of the UEFA Europa League, while Lillestrøm were left empty-handed at home after a 1-2 defeat against Torense. The Czech side’s form and the security of their own stadium make them the clear favorites. The lingering question, though, is whether the Norwegians can find a way to compete for points on foreign soil.
Sparta enter their second league-phase match in excellent shape. The club is riding a six-game winning run across all competitions, including a 5-3 friendly success over Jihlava during the international break. In the opening round of the Europa League, the Prague side travelled to Armenia and returned with a commanding 4-1 win. That scoreline reflected a complete dominance: 23 shots to 13, eight attempts on target to two, and an expected goals count of 2.62 against 1.92.
Back home in the Czech championship, Sparta defeated Pardubice 2:0 in their latest outing, though the performance was far from flawless. Coach Brian Priske openly criticized his team’s pressing in the first half of that match. Domestic league standings, meanwhile, show the club in third place, already eight points adrift of bitter rivals Slavia. There is clearly room for improvement, even if the overall results look positive.
Priske, however, will have to cope with significant squad losses. Captain Adam Karabec suffered an ankle injury during the Czech Republic’s national-team clash with England. The damage involves ligaments, and the midfielder is expected to be sidelined for roughly two months. That absence hurts Sparta’s attack badly: before that international fixture, Karabec had recorded a goal or assist in five consecutive matches, contributing two goals and three assists in that span. Additionally, the club will be without Alcocer, who has four goals and an assist in eight league appearances, and Mbe So, who featured in six domestic matches this term. There is also uncertainty surrounding left-back Ryneš, who registered one goal and one assist in ten matches across all competitions. He sat out the Pardubice fixture and could also miss the Europa League encounter. On top of that, Zelený picked up an injury in the last league game, leaving his participation in question.
Lillestrøm’s recent form hardly inspires confidence ahead of a trip to the Czech capital. Over their last four matches in all competitions, the Norwegian club have managed just one win — and even that came against Bærum, a third-division side, in the national cup, with a 5:1 scoreline. In the Europa League, Hans Erik Edegard’s men started the league phase with a dispiriting 1-2 home loss to Torense.
Yet that defeat may flatter the opposition, as Lillestrøm actually produced more in attack: 25 shots against 11, six on target to three, and a superior xG of 2.58 to 1.52. In their most recent league fixture, the team settled for a 2-2 draw at home to Molde. This time, though, the point probably felt fortunate, as Molde hammered twelve shots on target and generated 2.95 xG, looking far more likely to win. Defensive solidity has been a recurring problem: across the last four matches in all tournaments, Lillestrøm have failed to keep a single clean sheet and have shipped eight goals in total.
There is some good news — no new injuries emerged from the Molde match — but the treatment room is still busy. Winger Jebara, a regular starter before his setback, continues his recovery after featuring in eleven league games this season. Forward Alperud is also unavailable. Experienced centre-back Garnas, who was a fixture in the starting XI for several seasons, has managed only seven league appearances this year because of persistent fitness issues. His absence narrows the coach’s defensive options, while the injuries to Alperud and Jebara reduce the attacking alternatives off the bench.

Lillestrøm (4-5-1): Dalberg – Ranger, Foss, Gabrielsen, Elker – Bassi, Nyheim, Ottosson, Kitolano, Va – Olsen

Slovenian official Martin Matoša has been appointed for this match. The referee is not prone to making match-defining calls and avoids excessive harshness. In his last seven European fixtures, Matoša averaged 4.14 yellow cards per game and 26.57 fouls per match. During that same stretch, he did not send off a single player and awarded only one penalty.
Main prediction: Sparta look in full flow and have an excellent chance to extend their six-game winning streak in front of a home crowd. The Czech side have already won five of their six home matches in official competition this season, which includes beating Lyon 2:1 in Champions League qualifying. In four of those home wins, Sparta secured a margin of at least two goals. Lillestrøm, by contrast, appear unstable, with only one win in their past four outings — and that came against a vastly weaker cup opponent. The Norwegians also suffered a 0:3 league loss away to Viking in their most recent away day. The sensible play is a Sparta victory with a handicap of (-1.5), offered at odds of 1.97.
Prediction on goals: Sparta are clinical in the final third and regularly find the back of the net. Even when the performance level drops, they punish mistakes and are effective from set pieces. Over the last seven matches, including the friendly, the Czechs have never left the pitch without scoring, racking up a total of 22 goals in that run. The absence of Karabec, significant as it is, did not prevent Sparta from scoring twice in their latest league match. There is also a reasonable expectation that Lillestrøm can contribute in attack, as they have scored in eight of their previous nine games this season across all competitions. Therefore, the bet on both teams to score — Yes at odds of 1.87 — looks like the right call.
