AlbaceteBy Anthony Balogun — Football expert covering Nordic, Baltic and African leagues
Sporting Gijon have managed to string together two consecutive victories, yet their attacking play remains a far cry from convincing. Next up is a trip to Gijon for Albacete, a side that has crumbled in eight of their last nine league outings and suffered a humiliating defeat in the new coach's debut.
With 16 points on the board, Sporting currently sit sixth in the table after beating Celta Vigo B (3-2) and Cadiz (1-0). However, the win over Cadiz was a narrow escape – they managed only a single shot on target and snatched the winner in the 87th minute. Even the victory against Celta's reserves was far from comfortable: the visitors created five big chances despite playing a man down for more than half the match.
At home, Nicolas Larcamon's side have won just two of five matches, scoring a meagre four goals and drawing blanks on three occasions. Against Girona (0-2), the Asturians generated 1.91 xG but failed to find the net. Their attacking options are further depleted by injuries to Antonio Casas – who bagged a brace against Celta Vigo B – and winger Nikita Iosifov. Aivan Otero has only just returned to training and remains a doubt, meaning Alejo Sarco could once again lead the line.
Albacete sit rock bottom with just one point, having scored five goals and conceded 20. On the road, they have lost four times and drawn once, with a goal difference of 2-12. The debut of manager Joseba Etxeberria ended in a 5-0 thrashing by Valladolid: the visitors had shipped four goals by halftime and allowed seven big chances over the ninety minutes.
The defensive frailty is systemic. Against Cordoba (1-2) and Eibar (1-3), Albacete took the lead but could not hold on for even a draw. Now right-back Fran Gamez is injured, and his understudy Lorenzo Aguado is also sidelined. Etxeberria may be forced to shift Jose Corpas from midfield into defence. Up front, the situation is no better: the team has failed to score in their last three away trips, and striker Samu Obeng remains unavailable after a serious injury.
Sporting Gijon (4-2-3-1): Yanez – Rosas, Gularre, Saenz, Cuenca – Rodriguez, Corredera – Prendes, Gelabert, Gaspar – Sarco Injured: Casas, Ferrari, Iosifov, de la Fuente Questionable: Otero, Dunyabeitia, Nacho Martin, Bruno Rubio Coach: Nicolas Larcamon
Albacete (4-4-2): Marino – Corpas, Vallejo, Lopez, Neva – Albarracin, Pacheco, San-Bartolome, Valverde – Gonzalez, Soberon Injured: Aguado, Moreno, Pepe Sanchez, Obeng Questionable: Gamez Coach: Joseba Etxeberria
Main prediction: Sporting Gijon to win at odds 1.96 – assessed probability 55% (playable above 1.82). Sporting do not need to create a barrage of chances to exploit the visitors' defensive weaknesses. Albacete have conceded 12 goals in five away matches and looked especially vulnerable to crosses in Valladolid. With the right side of their defence in disarray due to injuries, the hosts should find it easier to advance into the box.
Total prediction: Under 2.5 goals at odds 2.05 – assessed probability 55% (playable above 1.82). Four of Sporting's five home matches have produced two or fewer goals, and the Asturians have been blanked three times. Losing Casas further curbs their attacking threat. Albacete have scored only five goals all season, just two in five away games. Given such low output from both sides, even a leaky Albacete defence does not guarantee a goal fest.
