Las Palmas
Real Sociedad BBy Anthony Balogun — Football expert covering Nordic, Baltic and African leagues
Las Palmas have a new man at the helm, but the points are still slipping away. Now the Canary Islanders face a Real Sociedad B side that has lost five straight matches and conceded in every single one of their ten league outings. Which struggling team will finally snap their poor run when they meet?
The Canary Islanders entered the season with promotion ambitions, yet after ten rounds they languish in 16th place with just 11 points. Their recent form is alarming: only one point collected from the last five matches, during which they have leaked 13 goals. The debut of Juan Manuel Rodríguez, who replaced Rubén de la Barrera, also fell flat—a 0–3 home defeat to Castellón. His experiment with a three‑centre‑back system backfired, though the coach has had an extra week to iron out the kinks.
Rodríguez’s options are severely limited by injuries. The absences of Iñaki González and Sergio Ruiz leave the holding midfield area thin, where Lojodice is more useful in possession than in breaking up play. Without Clemente and Viti, the full‑back positions lack depth, and the attacking rotation is hit by the unavailability of Sandro, Rekoba, and Ale García. The return of Jesé does offer some compensation up front.
Real Sociedad B sit 19th with eight points. Their run of five consecutive defeats has produced a goal difference of 6–15, and over the ten rounds the Basques have shipped 21 goals without a single clean sheet. Yet their attack is far from toothless: they have scored in all five away games, netting nine times on the road. Even against league leaders Almería (a 2–4 loss), Jon Ansotegi’s men fired off 21 shots and created six big chances.
The situation is compounded by major personnel problems. Orobengoa and Beitia are out through injury, while Lebarbier, Marchal, and Folgado have travelled with the first team for a European fixture. That leaves Ansotegi with very limited rotation options ahead of the trip to the Canary Islands.
Las Palmas (5‑4‑1): Caro – Pezzolesi, Suárez, Herzog, Andrés Rodríguez, Bassinga – Miyashiro, Lojodice, Kirian Rodríguez, Iván Jaime – Jefté
Unavailable: González, Clemente, Ruiz, Viti, Cedeño, Sandro, Rekoba, García (all injured); Park (doubtful)
Head coach: Juan Manuel Rodríguez
Real Sociedad B (4‑3‑3): Fraga – Ruperez, Calderón, Kita, Balda – Aguirre, Carbonell, Gorosabel – Díaz, Soroeta, Astiasaran
Unavailable: Orobengoa, Beitia (both injured); Lebarbier, Marchal, Folgado (all doubtful)
Head coach: Jon Ansotegi
Main prediction – Las Palmas to win (odds 1.95): For all of Las Palmas’s troubles, the visitors’ defence looks even more fragile. Home advantage, more experienced leaders, and an extra week of work under the new coach give the hosts a solid chance to end their losing streak. After such a poor start to the season, the need to pick up three points is especially pressing. We estimate the probability of this outcome at 60% (anything above 1.67 is playable).
Total goals prediction – Over 2.5 (odds 1.77): The two sides have combined for 40 goals conceded in ten rounds, and seven of Real Sociedad B’s ten matches have featured at least three goals. The Basques have scored in every away game and conceded in every league match, while Las Palmas are shipping almost two goals per game. We put the likelihood of over 2.5 goals at 65% (anything above 1.54 is playable).
